Homework Guidelines for Parents of Fourth Graders

Teachers and parents need to be partners in the learning process. Showing involvement in your child’s education is important in fostering learning and self-esteem. You can demonstrate your involvement and concern by frequently asking your child about something learned during the school day.

It is important for students to review and practice skills learned in class every day. Children in the Fourth Grade get a math assignment and MCAS prep homework every night during the week.

Knowing their multiplication facts is important for success in math. Please be sure that your child has mastered the multiplication tables to twelve.

Children must read for 20-30 minutes every night. After your child has read for the prescribed amount of time, you might ask about the main characters of the story or have your child make a prediction about what might happen next with an explanation of why.

Writing a personal narrative is another important skill that our fourth graders are working on so here are a few suggestions you can do at home to encourage better writing. Ask your child to talk about a favorite memory such as a birthday celebration or the first day your child came to BRCPS. You might just ask your child to describe something they see, hear, taste, feel or smell.

Every week fourth graders are asked to write in their professional writing journals. Have your child talk about what the writing assignment was for the week or, better yet, have your child share their writing journal with you.

Parents can encourage children at home by helping to ensure that homework assignments have been completed. If your child is having difficulty completing any homework assignment, please let the classroom teacher know.
